Sullivan Public Library To Use Collection Agency

The Sullivan Public Library board voted at its October 2008 meeting to use a collection agency to encourage patrons to return materials more than six weeks overdue to the library. The library board voted to charge the cost of this service to the individual patron whose account will be handled by the collection agency.
This policy was enacted with fairness to all library patrons in mind. Unreturned materials are not available for others to use or borrow. Replacing materials not returned uses money from the library budget that could better be used to purchase new items for patron use.
The library board hopes this practice will encourage all library borrowers to return items by the date due. Most library items may be renewed at the library, over the telephone, or online at the library’s website. Also, the library book drop is available to return items when the library is closed.
The library will still notify patrons that materials are overdue by telephone or by mail at the telephone numbers and/or address provided by the patron. Patrons will have ample time to respond prior to being turned over for collection.
Unique Management Services has been selected as the collection agency for the library. Unique Management works with libraries throughout the United States. They specialize in the recovery of overdue materials and have an excellent record of treating patrons professionally.
The Sullivan Public Library is serious about recovering overdue materials. Fortunately, only a small percentage of patrons using the library do not return materials as agreed. This new policy will not affect the vast majority of patrons who return materials on time.
