Sullivan Community Gearing Up For Holiday Concert
On Tuesday evenings, you will hear Christmas carols and lots of harmony coming from the high school music classroom. The Sullivan Community Choir, composed of your neighbors, friends, family and co-workers, have been hard at work since August practicing holiday music on Tuesday evenings in preparation for two concerts on Dec. 13 and 14.
Both concerts will be held at the Sullivan Performing Arts Theater at the Sullivan High School. The Saturday night concert, Dec. 13, will start at 7 p.m. Another performance will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14. Admission is only $5 for this exceptional performance. Tickets can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce, from choir members or at the door prior to each concert.
The choir is thrilled to have Deanna Spurgeon, former high school music instructor, as the director and Alice Hewkin, Sullivan graduate and middle school music teacher, as accompanist. In fact, many of the choir members were part of Deanna’s high school music ensembles in the past.
Concert attendees will also notice that many of the choir members are part of other music and church programs in the area.
This December concert, “Celebrate the Season,” will have special appearances by the Sullivan Brass Band, the Sullivan Primary School Mini-pops, as well as the Sullivan Seventh and Eighth Grade Show Choir. Much of the music will be familiar and is sure to get you immersed in the holiday spirit. The theater will be adorned in holiday decorations and filled with a festive feeling.
The Sullivan Community Choir is proud to be part of the Patrons of the Arts organization for the first time this year. The choir was started five years ago as a way to celebrate the amazing new community theater that became part of the Sullivan School District.
One of the first major performances in the theater was the community choir holiday concert. The choir donates proceeds from the concerts to the Patrons of the Arts, the school district, and also provides scholarships yearly to high school students.
This year’s voices will amaze those attending. The balance of basses, tenors, sopranos and altos seems to be at a peak for this performance. Some of the pieces include some well-known carols, a “Brazilian Noel,” a fun piece called “Riggin Up the Lights,” as well as some favorite selections from “Handel’s Messiah.”
The choir looks forward to seeing a large crowd at the performances. A reception will be held following the Saturday night performance for all audience members and performers. Please mark this date on your calendar and come and support your community and enjoy the music as you “Celebrate the Season” with the Sullivan Community Choir.
