A nostalgic holiday tradition that appeals to adults and children alike is the Gingerbread House. Hansel and Gretel made the gingerbread house familiar to Americans and Europeans. They are the two children who walked through the dangerous forest and came upon a house made of gingerbread. From that folktale start, the decorating of a Gingerbread House with all kinds of candies took off.
On Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7, Meramec Vineyards furthers tradition by hosting a Gingerbread House decorating class at the winery. Class begins at 2 p.m. and takes about an hour and a half. The instructor, Lynn Krause, who comes with much house building and decorating experience, will demonstrate some techniques and give lots of ideas for creating a holiday masterpiece.
Purchase of a ticket makes you a Gingerbread House owner —one already assembled and ready to decorate. (Tickets are $15). Everything needed to decorate your house is provided in the class. There will be plenty of candies and other edible decorating materials as well as icing. Lynn will guide and help all the “students” through a fun-filled afternoon of creating a memorable holiday tradition.
Krause is a certified executive pastry chef who some may remember did a breadmaking class at Meramec Vineyards a couple years ago. She is also an experienced culinary instructor (formerly with the St. Louis Community College Culinary program and currently with East Central College) and was the first head of Viking Culinary Center in St. Louis.
Among her other culinary affiliations is her membership in the St. Louis Culinary Society. This season the Meramec Vineyards class will be her third Gingerbread class.
It’s one ticket—one house. An adult and child can work together, but each child must be “enrolled” with an adult. Adults are welcome without a child.
Create your masterpiece and take it home to enhance your holidays. With limited class size, it is best to get your ticket soon. Call Meramec Vineyards to purchase your ticket or stop by the winery to purchase your ticket.
