Chris Frye Sets Single Season Rushing Record
Sports historians will tell you that records are meant to be broken and some last longer than others. During the Sullivan-Owensville game, Chris Frye became the Eagles’ all-time single season rushing record holder.
Chris, a 5’8” 155-pound junior running back, gained 161 yards against the Dutchmen, giving him a season total of 1,103 yards. His total breaks a record of 1,096 yards that had been held by Todd Sumner since 1972.
Frye’s record was set during a year in which the Eagles have gone, 9-1, and captured a district championship. Sumner’s record was set at a time when the Missouri State High School Activities Association only allowed teams to play nine regular season games. The 1972 Eagles were 2-7. Sumner, a three-year starter at running back set the record during his sophomore year and is still the Sullivan career rushing record holder with 2,520 yards.
Asked how it feels to set a new record, Frye said, “It feels good, but I’m more excited that we won our district and that our team gets to move on. I couldn’t have done it without our offensive line. Those guys have done a great job opening holes for me all year long.”
Talking about the Eagles’ upcoming game against the Mexico Bulldogs, he commented, “I don’t know a lot about them. We are going to watch game film of them tomorrow. We just have to go out and play good football.”
The Eagles play this evening at Sullivan High School with the game starting at 7 p.m.
The winner advances to play the winner of the Fulton-Salem game next Mon., Nov. 10.
