Unique Deer Hunt To Challenge Youth Hunters With Special Needs
A group of special youngsters that may not otherwise experience the thrill of deer hunting will have their very own chance to pursue whitetails this January, thanks to a cooperative effort between the Missouri Department of Conservation and two Washington County landowners.
Gerald and Carmen Medlin have offered their property to host this unique experience that will provide young hunters with permanent disabilities a special deer hunting opportunity designed around their needs.
This Youth Only deer hunt will take place on the Late Youth Deer Season on Sat., Jan. 3 and Sun., Jan. 4. The Medlin property is located in Washington County—approximately 10 miles south of Sullivan, MO on Highway 185 South (toward Potosi).
This Youth Deer Hunt is a recreational opportunity being offered to a special group of Missouri’s youths who have a permanent disability which prevents them from hunting unassisted. Eligible participants will be ages 6 to15 years old, and must be capable of controlling a firearm just prior to and at the time of discharge—without the physical assistance of another person (or with only verbal direction from another person).
Applications for this hunt must be received by 5 p.m. on Nov. 21, at which time registration will close. Eligible hunters will be picked on a first-come, first-serve basis until 12 hunters have signed up. There will also be a waiting list in the event of cancellations.
All hunters must attend a mandatory Deer Hunting Clinic scheduled for Sat., Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sullivan. From Dec. 6 to Jan. 1, 2009, all hunters must complete at least one mandatory shooting lesson at one of the Conservation Department’s Outdoor Education Training Centers in High Ridge or St. Charles.
Eligible applicants must have a parent or adult guardian attend all portions of this hunt and the clinic. Each youth hunter must be accompanied by an adult who has completed a Hunter Education Course. If the parent or adult guardian does not have Hunter Education certification, then the youth hunter will be assigned an adult guide who is Hunter Safety certified. All participants will be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian and an adult guide during the entire hunt.
More detailed information on the clinic, rifle practice and the actual deer hunt will be mailed out to the first 12 eligible applicants. To receive an application for registration, contact Conrad Mallady, Outdoor Skills specialist, at the Conservation Department’s Sullivan Public Contact Office by calling 573-468-3335, extension 230. Or e-mail Conrad.Mallady@mdc.mo.gov.
