Stumpe To Be Inducted In Missouri 4-H Hall Of Fame
Dorothy Stumpe of Washington will be inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame on Sun., Aug. 10. The induction ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the 4-H Exhibit Building on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia.
Mrs. Stumpe will join 37 other inductees. Each county is allowed to nominate one inductee into the Hall of Fame each year.
Mrs. Stumpe was nominated unanimously by the Franklin County 4-H Council to be the county’s 2008 inductee. She has served as Franklin County 4-H volunteer leader for 47 years.
In 1959, she started the first 4-H Club in the city of Washington. The name of the club has changed twice since then, and club leadership has changed many times, but the club still exists today as the Washington Eager Beavers 4-H Club.
Mrs. Stumpe was a 4-H member in Franklin County Kansas in the 1920s and ‘30s. She still has some of the things she made as a 4-H member including a scrapbook, pot holder, linen handkerchief, and a book made from recycled paper bags.
One of her proudest moments as a 4-H member was having the Grand Champion Fat Calf at the 1934 American Royal livestock show. Mrs. Stumpe also recalls planting a wind break as a 4-H member and, 30 years later, it saved the home and farm during a tornado. Her efforts in establishing the wind break and other conservation projects helped her win the title of State Conservation project winner.
As an adult, Mrs. Stumpe has served as a 4-H Club leader, and as a project leader for many different projects, including crochet, crafts and raising herbs. She is still very interested in conservation and teaches recycling to her project members. For example, her craft members used corn cob rings from the Meerschaum factory to make decorative wreaths.
She raised two children in the Franklin County 4-H program and has recently been named a 4-H Century Family indicating that her direct family members including parents, siblings, and children have totaled at least 100 years of involvement in the 4-H program.
