Local students (left to right), Paula Britton of Cuba, Liesel Benecke of Cuba, Jason Hobein of Owensville, Brandon Kniest of Steelville and Chrissy Siess of Bourbon, recently represented Crawford Electric Co-op at the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience in Jefferson City.
They joined more than 70 high school juniors from across Missouri for the annual conference held in July at the Capitol Plaza Hotel. The students earned their position at the conference, which is known by its acronym CYCLE, by participating in an essay contest sponsored by Crawford Electric earlier this year.
The CYCLE conference is an action-filled three days, which provides high school students opportunities to learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, the cooperative form of business and being a leader. The program included a day at the Missouri State Capitol, a session with Missouri Supreme Court Judge Mary Russell, a Missouri history “Jeopardy” game session, as well as education about Missouri’s electric cooperatives.
One highlight of the conference was hearing from Craig Scott, the brother of Rachael Scott, the student who died standing up for her beliefs during the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.
The CYCLE program is in its fifth year and has received the National Community Youth Service award from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association as the top youth program among all electric cooperatives in the country. For more information about the CYCLE program, visit www.amec.org/youth.html#cycle.
Crawford Electric Cooperative is a member of Touchstone Energy, a national alliance of locally-owned, community-minded electric co-ops with high standards of service. Crawford Electric serves more than 18,000 meters along more than 3,200 miles of distribution lines in Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Washington and Dent counties.
