Bourbon Booster Meeting
The Bourbon Booster Club met on Tuesday evening, Aug. 5 at the Bourbon Community Center. President Mary Heywood conducted the business meeting. She announced that there would be a welcoming reception for Dr. Tom Sharp, Bourbon’s new school superintendent, and his wife on Thursday evening and encouraged everyone to attend.
The Fall Festival plans were discussed, and committee reports were made.
The committee for the “Jr. Miss Bourbon” contest reported that they still need candidates and time is running out as the deadline for entry is Aug. 15. Any girls, 12, 13 or 14 in the Bourbon School District may apply to Charleen Perschbacher at Style House, LTD on Pine Street, across from the post office.
If they do not have a sponsor, the club will help them find one. Girls who have participated in the past commented about how much fun they had and how it helped them become less shy in public.
It is a great opportunity, the winner receives a crown, necklace and other small gifts, but everyone who enters receives gifts and flowers and is rewarded with a happy memory.
Daniel Sappington and other members of the new Community Drama Club were present and offered to entertain on Friday evening and again on Saturday afternoon. He will be in charge of Karaoke on Saturday, also.
The two-day festival, Sept. 19 and 20, will include the Friday evening parade, a cakewalk, washer tournament, games, music and other entertainment. Any group wishing to participate may sign up at City Hall to reserve a space. Inside spaces are $15 and outside spaces are $10. The fees are used to help the club pay for the advertising.
This year’s theme, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” helps to celebrate Bourbon’s new city hall and the work that has been done to improve Bourbon’s image along Old Highway 66, “The Mother Road.”
Julie Henson is the chairman of the Booster float committee and will be looking for volunteers with ideas. If you want to enter a float in the parade, please stop in and tell Bobbie at the police station, or call her.
Antique and classic cars are always welcome and help to make the parade bigger and better. Decorated bicycles and horses, wagons and buggies really add much as well as marchers and clowns. You are encouraged to join in the fun on Friday evening when the parade kicks off at 6 p.m.
They hope to have some demonstrations of quilting and weaving and other crafts during the festival this year.
There will be an auction and all donations will be sincerely appreciated. Also, volunteers are needed to help with the games and with the food, both cooking and serving. If you can help, please notify President Heywood, David Brine, Alice Bremer, Carol Hofstetter or Barb Condren.
In other business, the group discussed the Community Family Halloween event that is being planned for October and the success of the Farmers’ Market.
