Fire Fighters Battle Blaze
Monday evening, June 9, proved to be a long night for firefighters with the Sullivan Fire Protection District.
The district received two reported structure fires nearly 19 minutes apart from each other.
According to Sullivan Fire they were called to 72 A East Washington St., at 7:58 p.m. for a reported structure fire.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and located fire in the kitchen of the home rented to Stephane Feagin and owned by Steve Thurmond.
The renter reported that she had been cooking with hot grease and had put french fries into the grease on her stove when the grease boiled over the stove.
Firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes and extinguished the fire containing it to the kitchen area.
The fire was fought with 13 firefighters using four apparatus.
The second alarm, and most damaging, came in at 8:17 p.m. when firefighters were called to 41 Clonts d. to the home of Joe Aubin. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:29 p.m. and found the home consumed with fire and a total loss.
Firefighters remained on the scene with the fire until 2 a.m. with 22 firefighters using nine apparatus and assistance from St. Clair, Bourbon, and Missouri Baptist Ambulance.
According to the Franklin County Fire Investigators Office and fire officials the homeowner was grilling food on a bar-b-que grill on the porch of the home when and explosion occurred. it's believed that the propane tank on the grill exploded causing the fire.
The home was a total loss.
