Sun., Mar. 30 begins Grace United Methodist Church’s 12th year of serving monthly community dinners. Although served on the fifth Sunday this month because Easter was on the fourth Sunday, fourth Sunday dinners have become a tradition at the church.
The program was first started as a “Helping Hands Community supper,” free of charge, especially for families in need or the elderly. The need for delivery to the ill and shut-ins evolved and has been a major focus.
A project of the church’s Community Outreach committee, the meals continue today, usually on the fourth Sunday, and still free of charge. With an average of 70 meals delivered to homes, the number has reached as high as 90 on occasion.
Area residents who would enjoy a good meal and fellowship with others are invited to come to the church on Sunday evening. Serving will begin at 3:30 p.m. and continue to about 5 p.m.
This month’s menu will include cabbage jambalaya, French bread and Rice Krispies treats.
Those who need a meal delivered, free of charge, are invited to call the church office at 468-6010 anytime from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, or call Donna McKellips at 468-4769. Requests will also be accepted if you call the church anytime after 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Persons who are ill, have just returned from a hospital stay and aren’t up to preparing a meal, or unable to get out for some other reason are invited to contact the church for the meal to be delivered.
Reservations are not needed. Those able to come to the church are invited to “come as you are” to the church fellowship hall and enjoy the meal with others anytime from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday evening.
Grace United Methodist Church is located at 952 North Church Street (AF Highway) in Sullivan.
