SHS Golfers Ready To Go
Getting ready for golf season, you might think that Sullivan Eagles head coach, Chris Arand, would be at a loss for words about his golf team. After all, the Eagles lost four-time conference medalist and Missouri state qualifier, Brett Hulsey, to graduation. How does a coach replace that level of golfer? He doesn’t.
But Arand is blessed. Hulsey was the only senior he lost and the level of those returning gives Arand every reason to be excited for the season to begin. Returning are sophomore state qualifier, Alec Wickey, and junior letterman, Lee Songer.
Also battling for varsity playing time are seniors Jerry Cartwright, Dillon Renfro, Luke Strauser and Andrew Weiss; juniors R.J. Brown, Devon Robinson and Renee Ruff; sophomores Ben Cross, Kerry Roberts and Jordan Strauser; and freshmen Jordan Biermann and Cody Philpot.
In high school golf, five members are selected to golf in the varsity match and another five in the junior varsity match. From those, the top four scores in each level are used to determine the team score. Competition is fierce among team members to see who will compete and at what level.
During the 2007 season, Sullivan earned second place in the Four Rivers Conference, finishing behind the champion Hermann Bearcats. In district competition, they took third place, finishing behind both district champion Union and runner-up Hermann.
When asked about his expectations for this year’s team, Coach Arand said, “We have a good nucleus back in Wickey and Songer. Renfro, Strauser and Weiss all are experienced golfers. We should be among the teams to beat in the FRC if we play to our potential.”
The Eagles first match scheduled against the Owensville Dutchmen was rained out. Their next match will be tomorrow as they will compete in the Pacific Invitational.
