Three Juniors To Go To DC, Six To Jefferson City
High school students from Bourbon, Sullivan, Steelville, Owensville and Cuba will get to participate in unique leadership-development experiences this summer after advancing in Crawford Electric Cooperative’s Youth Tour competition.
Crawford Electric chose nine finalists this year based on students’ essays about the youth vote in the 2008 presidential elections. The finalists then competed on Mar. 13 in a knowledge quiz and were interviewed by a panel of three independent judges. Judges this year were state Sen. Frank Barnitz and state Reps. Jason Smith and Charlie Schlottach.
The three top-scoring finalists become Crawford Electric’s delegates to the annual Rural Electric Youth Tour, an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC. The six other finalists in the local competition win a trip to the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE) in Jefferson City.
This year’s DC delegates are: Alexandria Witt, daughter of Jeff and Angie Witt of Sullivan; Kaitlyn Hatcher, daughter of Michael and Patrice Hatcher of Steelville; and Carmolee Patt, daughter of Bill and Rose Patt of Bourbon.
The CYCLE winners this year are: Chrissy Siess of Bourbon High School; Liesel Benecke and Paula Britton, both of Cuba High School; Jason Hobein of Owensville High School; and Brandon Kniest and Kyle Robinson, both of Steelville High School.
On the Youth Tour to Washington, the students will become part of the Missouri delegation to a national conference of more than 1,000 young people from across the United States.
The delegates will experience unique leadership-development opportunities, including special access to the halls of government, guided tours of the most-popular monuments and fun group activities over a week in June.
CYCLE winners will enjoy similar activities at the state level over the course of several days in July.
