Two Cuba teens admitted their involvement in committing a class C felony of theft of copper worth over $500. Joseph Powers, 17, and Trent J. Korunka, 18, both of Cuba, were issued warrants for the crime.
Crawford County deputies were dispatched to the area of the Sho-Me Power substation, located south of Steelville, for the report of suspicious activity on Fri., Dec. 14. While en route, the deputy noticed a blue pickup truck coming from the direction of the substation.
The deputy continued to the substation, but could not locate anyone in the immediate area. The perimeter of the substation was found to be secure. Reportedly, the suspects returned that night to steal copper ground straps and spools of copper wire from the area.
Through the investigation, the license number of the vehicle that the deputy noticed traveling from the direction of the substation was obtained. The owner and passenger of the vehicle were identified and questioned. Powers and Korunka admitted their involvement in the stealing of copper from the substation as well as from other substations within the county.
Warrants were issued for Powers and Korumka on Thurs., Dec. 20 for theft/stealing of property or services more than $500 but less than $25,000. Bond was set at $7,500 for each suspect who remained in custody in lieu of bond.
