School Health Fair coordinator, Krystal Hulsey, set up stations for students to be screened for height, weight, heart rate, vision, hearing, head lice, and scoliosis. Parents volunteers included Sharon Breece, Jeanette Hofstetter, and Krystal Rodriguez.
Mary Allers-Korostynski, R.N. performed the scoliosis screenings for students in grades 5 and 7. The data that were gathered become part of the students’ health files and contribute toward the completion of state-required reports. Parents are notified when results indicate that further screening is recommended.
The culminating activity is the presentation of “gift” bags that are comprised of health-related items. For example, each student is given a healthy breakfast bar, courtesy of Droege’s Foods. The bags also contain combs, samples of toothpaste, small bars of soap and literature regarding exercise and healthy eating habits.
The event represents a genuine service to students and their parents.
